Why Somatic Pain and Fibromyalgia are Painful

By: Dr Alex Robber

Some 100 million Americans are estimated to be dealing with some type of chronic pain. Doctors spend much time attempting to identify methods to treat this pain, as you can imagine. That is why they have developed a scheme for categorizing pain.

There are three main pain categories: harmful, neuropathic and idiopathic. However, there is also many subcategories, one of which is particularly attractive for fibromyalgia persons is somatic pain.

Understanding the Somatic Pain

Somatic pain is categorized as nociceptive pain in the wider category. Harmful pain results from tiny receptors in the skin and underneath the tissue called nociceptors. When harmful substances, like cutting yourself, are wounded, they send electrical signals to the brain along the nerves.

These signals are then interpreted by the brain to be pain and signals are sent back into the region where the nociceptors are situated. That’s why it hurts where the skin has been wounded when you cut your arm, even if the pain is really starting with the brain.

These adverse factors are also caused by domastic pain but “somatic pain” relates specifically to pain derived from soft body tissues such as the skin, connective tissues and muscles. Two kinds of somatic pain are available: superficial and profound. Superficial somatic pain is skin and mucous membranes pain. Somatic pain can result in any injury such as a cut, burn, or infection to this tissue.

Deep somatic pain, such as joints, bones or tendons, happens under the skin of the tissue. You experience profound somatic pain if you pull a muscle in your leg. The same goes for circumstances such as arthritis which leads to an inflammation of the joint connective tissue.

Superficial pain is more like a sharp burning feeling, while profound pain appears like burning or painful. It’s clearly a large category. There are also several conditions which can result in somatic pain. Although fibromyalgia pain is categorized as idiopathic pain, it is also possible to create several these conditions in individuals with fibromyalgia.

Link Between Somatic Pain and Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia increases danger by a variety of circumstances are created. Some of the most frequent circumstances are autoimmune. Autoimmune conditions are like arthritis, lupus and the syndrome of Sjogren. This is triggered when the tissue is attacked by the immune system that causes inflammation. The joint tissue or synovium starts to swell during arthritis.

If the immune system has lupus, it attacks tissue throughout the body, including the skin. Sometimes, people with lupus create big skin rashes. These rashes are highly light-sensitive and UV exposure can trigger somatic pain.

The mucous membranes are attacked by the Sjogren syndrome. Therefore, the membranes swell and lose their moisture production capacity. The membranes are gradually damaged and can cause severe pain.

Somatic Pain and Fibromyalgia Treatments

Obviously, what type of therapy you need depends on the situation that causes it. Simple, cross-country painkillers are the prevalent types of pain control. These operate by blocking inflammatory enzymes that make them ideal to treat autoimmune disorders.

It’s fantastic with some fundamental first aid for minor wounds as well. For profound pain, it is often useful to ice the impacted region to decrease pain.

More serious pain is often prescribed for physical therapy or opiate pain relievers. Opioids are one of the finest tools for the therapy of severe pain. However, they also have serious risks. In many countries, deaths from overdose opioids are a major issue. According to CDC, around 91 Americans die every day from opioids.

They also run a serious risk of physical dependence where the drug is needed for your body. Not to mention that the treatment of opioids cannot be useful. But taking them responsibly and always following the doctor’s recommendation is extremely important. If you’re experiencing pain, it’s always best to see a doctor.

Before taking any medication and any treatment always concern your health care provider and it is important to be diagnosed correctly. Stay Healthizes!

Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain and spinal cord process painful and nonpainful signals.
