Is there any link of Aluminum Toxicity with Fibromyalgia?

People suffering from fibromyalgia have a lot of symptoms. Some of the symptoms might be symptomatic of some other condition. One of those conditions includes aluminum toxicity.

What is Aluminum Toxicity?

Aluminum toxicity occurs when a person breathes in a huge amount of aluminum in the air or stores this in his body. It is known to everyone that aluminum is the metal that is found in the earth’s crust. Moreover, it means that our environment contains aluminum too, which is mixed with many other elements like fluorine, oxygen, and silicon as well.

Exposure to aluminum is not harmful in some cases. But if there are high levels of aluminum, some serious health issues can occur. You need to talk to your physician if you feel like you have high levels of aluminum.

Causes of Aluminum Toxicity

Aluminum is present in almost all foods, in the water, in the atmosphere, and in our soil because it is a widespread element. So, it can be a lot easier to have high levels of it. You can be exposed to high levels of aluminum in the following ways:

  • If you breathe in the dust of aluminum in the air while working.
  • If you are living in the area where it is being mined or processed.
  • If you are having some vaccinations that involve aluminum.
  • If you are eating those foods which contain high amounts of aluminum.
  • If you are living in a dusty environment.
  • If you are living near some particular sites for harmful wastes.
  • If you are living in the area where there are high levels of aluminum naturally.

Risk factors in the development of Aluminum Toxicity

Aluminum toxicity can be developed in anyone. However, aluminum toxicity is likely to be developed in a certain group of people more, as compared to the people who don’t fit in that group. Some risk factors that increase the chances to develop aluminum toxicity are also discussed below. You need to talk to your physician if you fall under either of the groups.

  • Aluminum toxicity is likely to be developed in those people whose kidney functioning reduces.
  • Aluminum toxicity is likely to be developed in older people.
  • Aluminum toxicity is also developed in people with fibromyalgia and has a weakened immune system.

What are the symptoms of Aluminum toxicity?

The symptoms that go along with aluminum toxicity are discussed below. However, if you have these symptoms, don’t think that you are suffering from aluminum toxicity. These symptoms can also occur due to some other less serious condition.

You should consult your physician if you are having some of these symptoms, especially when you are having a kidney disease or if you are on dialysis.

Aluminum toxicity and Red Blood Cells

Red blood cells transport oxygen to the body, so they are supposed to be important. The number of red blood cells in the body decreases due to the symptoms related to aluminum toxicity like impairment in the absorption of anemia and iron.

Diagnosis of Aluminum Toxicity

Your physician will discuss and perform a physical exam if you are suffering from any of the above-mentioned symptoms. Some tests will be done that include diagnostics tests such as x-rays of the long bones, bone biopsy for measuring the level of aluminum in the body, a blood test for anemia, and a deferoxamine infusion test.

Treatment of Aluminum Toxicity

Aluminum toxicity has many different plans of treatment. Some of them include:

Avoiding aluminum: some advice will be given to you by your physician on avoiding or at least limiting the exposure to aluminum through diet and other sources as well.

Medications: a medication might be prescribed to you that is known as deferoxamine mesylate. This medication is used to diminish the aluminum present in your body.  Chelation is a process that helps in getting rid of poisonous materials in the body and this medication functions through this process.

How to prevent Aluminum Toxicity?

You should take some steps to avoid the following materials that contain aluminum in order to diminish the chances of developing aluminum toxicity:

Aluminum toxicity and Fibromyalgia

The high levels of glucogenesis, which produces glucose from fats, amino acids, and other non-carbohydrate substances, cause the pain that occurs due to fibromyalgia. This production of glucose occurs due to the demand for energy by the body and when this glucose is not used, the breakdown of muscle and storage of fats occur. This is one of the initial causes of pain and fatigue in people with fibromyalgia.

Adenosine triphosphate or ATP is a chemical that is responsible for the metabolic functioning of transforming sugars and fats into energy for the body. Research has shown that there is a deficiency of some essential compounds needed for this process in people with fibromyalgia. These include ADP (adenosine diphosphate, oxygen, substrate, and magnesium). Fatigue, depression, and muscle pain will occur without having sufficient levels of these in the body.

Some evidence has shown that fibromyalgia people are deficient in magnesium also, which is considered to be the most primary and important element required for the synthesis of ATP. The deficiency of magnesium can also result in aluminum toxicity because the toxic effects of aluminum on the body are dealt with by magnesium. Phosphates that are important for synthesizing ATP are prevented by aluminum to be absorbed.
