Understanding Dizziness and Fatigue
Dizziness is a word describing the sensation of spinning while off-balance. You can use these more specific terms to explain to your doctor exactly how you feel:
- Imbalance is when you feel shaky
- Lightheaded means you feel tired and woozy
- Vertigo is a feeling of spinning when you are not moving
You can feel dizzy and exhausted in many different conditions. Such signs are transient at times, or they may come and go. If you often feel dizzy or exhausted, have a consultation with your doctor. Untreated dizziness and tiredness can lead to a fall. It can also increase your risk as you drive into an accident.
Your body needs energy for sugar, also called glucose. You can get dizzy, shaky, and exhausted if your blood sugar level drops.
Low blood sugar is often a side effect of diabetes treatment with insulin and other drugs. Such medications lower blood sugar, but the blood sugar could drop too much if the dosage is not right.
If you don’t have diabetes, you can also get hypoglycemia. It can happen if you have not eaten in a while or if you have not eaten alcohol.
2nd Cause is Low Blood Pressure
Blood pressure is your blood pressure that pushes against the walls of the blood vessel as it circulates through your body. You may have signs such as dizziness or lightheadedness, and fatigue when your blood pressure drops. Certain symptoms are:
- blurred vision
- fast and shallow breathing
- nausea
- thirst
Red blood cells carry oxygen to all tissues and organs. The body does not have enough red blood cells when you have anemia, or these cells do not function well enough. You may feel dizzy and exhausted due to a lack of oxygen.
4th Cause is Migraine Headaches
Migraines are intense, throbbing headaches that last between a couple of hours and a few days. You may experience symptoms along with the headache that include:
- vision changes, such as seeing flashing lights and colors
- nausea, vomiting and fatigue
- sensitivity to light and sound

Many medications as side effects can cause dizziness and fatigue.
Your heart normally beats in a familiar rhythm of “lub-dub.” Your heart beats too slowly or too fast when you have an irregular heartbeat or arrhythmia. It could skip beats as well.
Other signs of arrhythmia, apart from dizziness and exhaustion, include:
- fainting
- shortness of breath
- chest pain
7th Cause is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is an excessive exhaustion disorder, even after you’ve slept well. CFS signs include dizziness and difficulties in keeping the equilibrium.
You may also have the following symptoms:
- muscle or joint pain
- headache
- sleep problems
- trouble remembering
- trouble concentrating
8th Cause is Vestibular Neuronitis
An infection such as cold or flu can inflame your inner ear’s vestibular nerve. To keep you upright and balanced, this nerve sends sensory signals to your brain. Swelling can cause dizziness and vertigo in the vestibular nerve. You may also feel tired.
Dehydration occurs when there is not enough fluid in your body. If you don’t drink enough water, you can get dehydrated. This is particularly true when you are in hot weather or exercise outdoors.
