Understanding Diets Affect Migraines
So various factors can cause a migraine, including what we eat and drink. Because it is believed that food triggers combined with other migraine-causing triggers are most impactful, according to the Migraine Research Foundation. But this mixture is extremely individualized, making it difficult to examine.
Therefore nothing like a universal migraine trigger exists. However in some people, there are some common triggers that may cause or contribute to migraines.
However too much caffeine and withdrawal (or insufficient) of caffeine can cause migraines. Similarly yet caffeine can actually help prevent oncoming migraines, according to the American Migraine Foundation. Therefore with occasional use, it can also offer relief from headache.

Most processed foods contain sweeteners that are artificial. These are used as alternatives with sugar for people with diabetes. But it can cause migraines to these sweeteners. Especially aspartame is thought to cause migraines, according to the researches.
Alcohol is considered to be one of the most common products that cause migraines. For about 25 percent of people who get regular migraines, red wine and beer are thought to be triggered. Alcohol can cause dehydration, a major contributor to the production of headaches.
However the second most common cause for migraines is chocolate, according to the American Migraine Foundation. This affects an estimated 22 percent of migraine sufferers. It contains caffeine and beta-phenylethylamine as well, which in some people can trigger headaches.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a naturally occurring glutamic acid in our bodies. It is also present in certain foods and as a food additive in many foods. Eating is considered safe, but it is related to migraines by some researchers. The American Migraine Foundation notes that it can cause severe migraines in 10-15% of those experiencing migraines. In some cases, other preservatives can also cause migraines.
Cured meats including delicious pork, bacon, hot dogs, and sausages — all contain preservatives called nitrates that retain color and taste. Such foods can release nitric oxide into the blood, which is thought to dilate the brain’s blood vessels. There is evidence that migraines can be caused or triggered by nitric oxide.
However there is a substance called tyramine in age cheeses. So this occurs when the ageing of a food induces protein breakdown. Therefore longer the cheese age, the lower the level of tyramine. Common tyramine-high cheeses include:

- so blue cheese
- therefore parmesan
8th is Pickled and Fermented Foods
However unlike aged cheeses, high amounts of tyramine can be found in pickled and fermented products. Such foods are:
- because of pickles
- therefore kimchi
- because of pickled okra
- so pickled jalapenos
However eating frozen foods and beverages such as ice cream or slushies can cause intense, stabbing head pain. Because if you eat cold food quickly, after exercise, or when overheated, you are most likely to experience headaches that become migraines.
Therefore in some people, salty foods especially salty foods that may contain harmful preservatives, that cause migraines. Because high sodium intake can increase blood pressure, which can cause headaches and migraines.
