Why Use Complementary and Alternative Therapies for Mesothelioma?

By Researcher: James Robber

Because malignant mesothelioma has no proven cure, many people diagnosed with this cancer are willing to try alternative treatment options to help them live longer. Many long-term survivors of mesothelioma have said they have defied their oncologist’s treatment recommendations to cure their disease.

For addition to traditional cancer treatment, additional treatments for a more general approach to cancer are included and alternative therapies are used instead of standard cancer therapy. The term “Complementary and Alternative Medicine” (CAM) defines two approaches. The approach is complementary, while the alternative approach is unusual.

The advantage of this holistic approach–also known as integrative oncology–is that a person is best treated using both conventional and natural treatments. Cancer treatments can be aggressive and detrimental to the body, but many people with mesothelioma also have a survival. Not everybody’s conventional diagnosis. Some people choose it, while others are not qualified to do so. It is with the help of the family and medical team that you decide whether to adopt a complementary or other method of treating your mesothelioma.

Survivors of Mesothelioma are using Alternative Treatment Therapies

Most patients of mesothelioma have undergone additional treatments. Some patients have integrated CAM therapy into their conventional plan to offer a more holistic approach to cure. Many patients did not qualify for traditional treatment because their cancer was too advanced and only allowed to treat the disease with alternative treatments. Regardless of how these patients were inspired to pursue CAM treatments, they proactively embraced a stronger prognostic method.

Complementary Methods for Mesothelioma

Scientists have clinically tested their utility in cancer care with acupuncture, massage, mental-body therapy and other alternative treatments, and mesothelioma survivors are used.

Although no traditional or complementary therapy has proven to treat mesothelioma, certain supplementary therapies treat mesothelioma symptoms and certain side effects of conventional cancer therapies. Complementary therapies that improve your physical or mental health can have a positive impact on your health overall.

1st is Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an old healing method that applies needles across the body to relieve pain and promote health. Many cancer patients have acupuncture tried and report it helps with pain, tiredness, anxiety and nausea. Acupuncture clinical studies have demonstrated that pain and radiation and chemotherapy-induced and postoperative nausea (though not more effective than the anti-nausea drugs currently in use) have benefited from the treatment. People with side effects of pain relievers and nausea drugs may recommend acupuncture to help control their pain or nausea after cancer treatment.

2nd is Massage

The massage involves muscle kneading and rubbing using different techniques with the hands. Massage therapists are trained to work professionally with the human body and some therapists are trained to work with cancer patients. Most reported numerous benefits for physical and mental health, including pain relief, muscle tension and anxiety.

A study published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management showed that massage therapy decreases cancer pain, nausea, tiredness, anxiety and depression by around 50%. In patients who received a Swedish or light-touch massage, 58% of patients who received foot massage benefited in comparison to 50%. With each additional massage, participants reported a further reduction of the symptoms showing the results of the increase in massage with further treatment.

Lymphatic massage, also known as manual lymph drainage, is one kind of massage that is used after certain cancer operations to relieve swelling of the limbs (called lymphedema). The treatment is usually carried out in a hospital or an outpatient clinic by lymphedema specialists.

3rd is Mind-Body Practices

Mind-body therapy involves procedures that bind the mind to the body. The most common forms of brain and body therapy are yoga, qigong and tai chi. These treatments offer a variety of health benefits for people living with cancer in clinical trials.

Yoga helps to blend respiration with postures and concentration. The positions differ from basic seating to standing and balancing positions.

Yoga impact studies found that people with cancer can:

  • Reduce tension, tiredness, and pain in the joints
  • Improve mood, sleep, quality of life and well-being

Gentle yoga types are best suited for cancer or rehabilitation patients. The examples of gentle styles include chair Yoga, restaurant Yoga and Yin Yoga. Classes for persons living with cancer are available online and throughout the U.S. Qigong and Tai Chi in many major cancer centers. Both activities incorporate breathing knowledge and body positions. Originally from China, the practice focuses on going through a variety of poses slowly and carefully.

  • Improved quality of life, increasing the physical functioning and resilience of cancer patients’ studies
  • Reducing fatigue, inflammation and cortisol levels
  • Increasing mental health, enhancing self-esteem, cognitive function and reducing the signs of depression

4th is Meditation

Attention is the core of meditation. Although certain forms of meditation are only aimed at controlling or limiting the thoughts of the mind, most approaches to meditation teach that calm observation of the mind is a main goal. Meditation of consciousness is a common non-religious form of meditation which helps you to realize your thoughts by practicing non-judgmental awareness and acceptance.

The method strengthens through a study of research on consciousness meditation:

5th is Mental Health Counseling

Most cancer patients choose to speak to a mental health counselor to support them in treating cancer. Counseling helps cancer patients and their loved ones become less depressed and influenced by how they respond to traumatic experiences. Counselors will help you manage intense emotions and cope with every relationship, company or financial problem. The counseling is a comforting and constructive treatment that can aid you and your loved ones in their lives after being diagnosed with mesothelioma.

Internet, mobile and in person, therapy is available. Personal therapy, couples, families and groups are available. Individuals with mesothelioma and relatives can use an online support group for mesothelioma. Most hospitals and cancer centers give patients mental health advice — ask your healthcare team if you have a counselor at your door. There is also an online therapy directory for an advisor near you.

6th is Dietary Improvements

Even years past their prediction, many people who live with mesothelioma claim that dietary changes help them feel better. The healthy diet provides the body the nutrients to fight infection and disease. You can enjoy a healthy diet and improve your mood.
